Master Luther Upson, proprietor of the Elite Wushu Academy in Silver Spring, Md., has dedicated most of his life to the practice, performance, and instruction of martial arts. More than 35 years immersed in the culture — including four years of advanced study in Beijing, China — have earned him a 6th-degree black belt in Kung Fu Tien Shan Pai Northern Style, with training in grappling, weapons, hand defense, boxing, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
The journey from student to teacher began as a young protégée of the acclaimed Grand Master Dennis Brown, who recognized and cultivated Upson's potential, eventually elevating him from star pupil to chief instructor at Brown's own Shaolin WuShu Training Center. He spent more than two decades there, passing on his expertise to hundreds of students of all ages, before venturing out on his own. Upson's years of experience, commitment to the WuShu discipline, and spirited personality have spawned a strong following — not only of martial artists but also a general community of fitness enthusiasts who swear by his cardio kickboxing class.
Upson has redefined and improved on the concept over the past 15 years or so, with the current format incorporating kicks and punches, strength training, core-building exercise, jump ropes, training pads, and more to deliver an intense and effective whole-body workout.
